volunteer

We expect over 1,000 guests at each event and need more than 300 volunteers to make sure things run smoothly. If you are passionate about being part of the solution to end homelessness in Toronto, volunteering at Homeless Connect Toronto is a great way to get involved.

volunteer roles

greeters

Greeters welcome each guest to the event, starting outside. You're the first person they meet at the event, so be prepared to say hello with a smile and provide a warm welcome. You will help with crowd control outside, ensure orderly conduct within our line-up, answer any questions and offer additional support.

gophers

Gophers provides extra support to services and/or relieve other volunteers so they will receive adequate breaks. You will assist at different stations throughout the day. Ready to take on any job? This is the perfect role for you!

registration

Registration volunteers assist guests in filling out registration forms, help guests to identifying the services that they would like to access at the event, and even connect them to a translator (if needed). Your role is to help our guests know what's available to them and how they should prioritize their day.

data

A bit shy, but still want to be involved? Data volunteers help enter information from registration and guest experience surveys throughout the event day. You will be required to bring a laptop to the event for data entry.

guides

Guides accompany our guests from registration to the services. You will also answer questions and assist guests with locating the services throughout the day. Your role is to provide a one-on-one “concierge” experience to our guests. Be prepared to be on your feet all day, walking (sometimes running) around!

set-up / tear-down

Set-up and tear-down helps with set-up on event day (before 9AM) and tear-down at the end of the day (after 4PM). There are also some positions for setting up the day before. If you are able to assist, kindly indicate on your registration form.

HCT6_Volunteer breakdown %@4x.png

When you register to be a volunteer, we ask you for your preferred role and try to accommodate for that. However, the bulk of our volunteers are assigned as Guides, making up 75% of the volunteers we need to run our event successfully.

Why is this?
What makes our event special and important to guests is not only the access to services, but the personal one-on-one interactions between each guest and our volunteers. Each year, we anticipate more and more guests coming through the doors and with that - more Guides to help support these interactions.

what to expect as a day-of hct volunteer?

  • ALL volunteers work closely with our guests in various positions. See descriptions above.

  • HOURS. We ask that you dedicate a FULL-DAY (9:30AM to 4:30PM) to volunteer at the event.

  • ORIENTATION. All NEW volunteers are asked to attend a mandatory half-day orientation session to ensure the event can maintain its high standards. RETURNING volunteers are encouraged to attend a training session if you attended one prior to 2018 to have more up-to-date information about event changes. Training will take place one week before the event. The sessions will prepare volunteers with event information, sensitivity training, and provide you with your volunteer package and volunteer t-shirt.

  • ROLES. Role placements are assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis to be make sure it is fair for all volunteers. On your application, please be clear about which role you would like to be placed. While we can’t guarantee your request, we do try our best to assign you to your requested role.

  • ON YOUR FEET. The event day is very hands-on. Be prepared to be standing and walking for the majority of the day. If you have issues with mobility, we’d still love your help, but make sure you indicate on your volunteer registration form, so we can assign you to an appropriate role. There are very limited availabilities for a seated position at the event.

  • SET-UP/TEAR-DOWN positions require heavy lifting as we will be moving all event materials and setting up all booths and equipment for the services and event.

group volunteering

We DO have some limited group volunteering opportunities for set-up, which may include sorting clothes for the clothing bank, packing toiletry comfort kits, etc. If your group is interested in volunteering, please contact us at volunteer[at]hctoronto.org.

Unfortunately, we are unable to accept groups of volunteers for event day. Should you have a group of people that are interested in volunteering, please sign up as individuals and state on the volunteer application what group you are with. The volunteer coordinator will try to keep groups together, but there is no guarantee that groups will be placed together as it depends on placements as needed.

The organization of the event was excellent! One orientation day, very clear and concise, well defined roles, opportunity to participate at a level suitable for my abilities, everyone was very respectful - of volunteers, guests, and all involved.
